It doesn’t work!

My brain is about to explode…

This whole social media, Facebook advertising thing is crap and I simply don’t have time to work it out.

If you are like many small business owners who have this mindset…BEWARE!

Let’s look at why.

The latest statistics tell us

More than 1.65 billion people now use Facebook each month and 1.09 billion each day (up 16% compared to last year)

More than 1.5 billion people accessed Facebook from mobile devices in March 2016, up 21% from last year.

More than 1 billion people are now using Facebook on mobile every day.

Which pretty much means Facebook OWNS online advertising.

82% of Facebook’s revenue comes from MOBILE advertising.

85 cents of every new dollar spent in online advertising will go to Google or Facebook!

This is not about whether we agree with the data or not, it’s about getting into it and leveraging your business or be prepared to get left behind.

The past few years have shown that whilst Facebook has increased the number of ads it’s users see, it has not harmed the users experience due to the ability to target, and provide relevancy for people who see the ad, because of the individual interests.

In my HSC year, I studied the well-known novel ‘1984’ by George Orwell…mmm.

Is big brother watching us?

Facebook know A LOT about each and every one of us.

There are two ways to look at this.

Either with fear or with excitement…which means, either way, you should care about these numbers.

Whether you advertise on Facebook or not, or even use Facebook or not, or even if you simply do not give a damn…the future of your business is being written by these trends.

How does this relate to complete overwhelm?

A lot in fact.

After speaking to hundreds and hundreds of business owners, this is the deal.

They know they need to get on-line, they know they need to leverage social media, and know deep down they will get left behind…

But they DON’T do anything about it…they stick their heads in the sand and continue to do the normal routine, whilst fighting a process they know nothing about and one they choose to not learn.

Their actions speak louder than their words…or to be more specific…their inaction tells me they don’t take these numbers seriously and don’t want to grow their business like they say they want to.

Picture This

David has been in the travel industry for over 20 years, has seen the trends come and go, and has seen how online research and shopping has put the industry on its head.

David has been working for himself for the past five years and knows without a shadow of a doubt he needs to leverage marketing and being on-line, stand out and be the leader in his area.

There have been workshops attended, courses paid for, information gathering at its best.

Thousands of precious dollars spent on learning stuff, with little or no implementation.

Something I, as an educator stand for…its all about the implementation, the step by step process…THEN and ONLY THEN, the education.

Back to David…he has downloaded and read a lot on marketing on-line, and gets caught up with the battleground raging in his head, especially when he doesn’t understand what is he ready for, or what is he meant to do.

You guessed it…nothing happens, money is spent on print media, or on a broad radio campaign, and he wonders why it is not working.

The way it worked as little as five years ago will not work against the leader in this space right now…Facebook.

David has two choices, to stress about the state of the economy, how the election year is reeking havoc in the industry….to continue to feel good that he is doing something with the research he comes up with, whilst achieving nothing new…how can you expect to get a different result, by doing the same thing?


David can stress out about the state of the economy, how it is an election year and worry about the future of his industry…whilst actively taking steps to learn what to implement, by taking ONE high priority step a day…whilst not having all the answers, and knowing it will work out…knowing there is a LOT of work to do and is up for the challenge.

How many times do you come up with an idea or strategy, something you know is good for business and put it off… days, turn into weeks, and weeks turn into months.

The opportunity cost wasted due to overwhelm and inaction.

I have said it before and will say it again…speed to market is KEY to making this on-line space a positive return on investment for your time and money.

On average I would spend at least an hour per day looking after this space, spending advertising dollars wisely on Facebook, and getting a fantastic return on investment from both.


Did it happen overnight? 

Of course not, however I used a small ritual often to stay on track, especially when I had no understanding of how this digital on-line space worked.

Let me share this simple and effective tool, one that can be achieved in under 20 minutes.

Step One: 

Get a blank piece of paper – write down everything you need to do or are worried about. Please do not write down a one-word answer, it means nothing. You have 10 minutes for this step, so please keep a timer next to you.

For example money – what is the problem, is it cash-flow? ..BE SPECIFIC


Step Two:

Take three coloured textas, highlighters..whatever you like, just not red.

What is the high priority high return items on your page? What is going to get you the results you need THIS WEEK in your business?

Choose one colour and highlight the things on your list that are the high priority things, the items which will either make you money or get a result…

Such things which need to be done within the next day or two.

For example money – what is something you can do to make more dollars in the next few days.

Do you have a list? What can you put together TODAY to create an opportunity to make money?


Step Three: 

Take the next colour and highlight the things that can wait a week. Those that do not need immediate attention.


Step Four: 

Take the third colour and highlight the items which can wait a few weeks.

For example…updating your image library, folding away the summer clothes…let’s be honest, it can wait and does not require your energy.

FOCUS on the high priority and high return for the next few days only.


Step Five: 

Pick the top three from the highlighted items in step two.

This is all you need to FOCUS on right now…place the priority as it should be and commit to getting them done today before you focus on anything else.

When you feel the overwhelm and frustration bubble up, get out your paper and pens and take action today.

When you write something down, you are letting your brain know it means something…getting the thoughts out of your head in under 10 minutes will change your day immediately.
